What's Biocaps

BIOCAPS (Biomedical Capacities Support Programme) is a 4,611,410 € project funded by the European Commission under the 7th Framework Programme, FP-7-REGPOT 2012-2013-1, grant agreement no. FP7- 316265. The project aims to support the Institute of Biomedical Research of Vigo (Galicia, Spain), a newly established research institution of the Galician public Health Service (Servizo Galego de Saúde, SERGAS) and the University of Vigo.

The project started on the 1st of February 2013 and will finish on the 31st of July 2016.

The Institute of Biomedical Research of Vigo (IBIV) aims to promote basic, applied and transnational research in the biomedical field. The BIOCAPS project will strengthen a National Institute of Excellence in Biomedical Research, the Institute of Biomedical Research of Vigo (IBIV), by linking the needs of the health service with scientific and technological offers, tackling the challenges of society through biomedical research and innovation. Activities within the project will be directed towards this goal and, thereby, increase the critical mass and research lines by the following means: recruitment of senior scientists, acquisition of new state-of-the-art equipment, collaborations with leading European research centres, and technology transfer activities.

The expected impact of the BIOCAPS project will be an increase in the quality and quantity of IBIV´s research, closer interaction between basic and applied researchers, technology transfer and innovation (licensing of patents, protocols, spin-offs).

The IBIV will become a dynamic actor in the European Research Area (ERA), by creating a focused research core in a region that is considered highly strategic due to its socio-economic conditions.

This project has received funding from the European Community's Seventh Framework Programme, under grant agreement no. FP7- 316265-BIOCAPS.
