Neurological Sciences and Rare Diseases

Neurological science is an interdisciplinary science that collaborates with multiple fields in the aim of providing a medium for the investigation and dissemination of knowledge in neurological disorders. The scope of neuroscience has broadened to include different approaches used to study the medical, molecular, cellular, developmental, structural and other aspects of the nervous system. A large number of neurological disorders are “rare diseases”, defined as those with a prevalence of less than 5 cases per 10,000 inhabitants, affecting 5 to 7% of the general population in developed countries. They are also characterized by a great clinical and molecular heterogeneity with more than 8,000 described entities.
