Infectious diseases, Inflammation and Immunity

Clinical Immunology studies the mechanisms of defence, the interaction host-pathogen in infectious diseases, and many illnesses including inflammatory processes, autoimmune diseases, hypersensitivity reactions or immunodeficiency. In most of these processes and in many others, inflammation has been found to be the common element, and is crucial for understanding the basics of this process and its potential prevention or modulation. Moreover, Immunotherapy is changing the way many diseases are treated (e.g. monoclonal antibodies directed to inflammatory cytokines or to tumoral cells), and it is expected that this field will grow in the near future, providing hope tomany patients. Immune response to new nanovaccines and studies related with the biocompatibility of new nanomaterials are areas of special interest in the field of nanotechnology.
