Biomaterials, Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine

Regenerative medicine offers unique opportunities for developing new therapeutic approaches to prevent and treat many significant human diseases arising from the loss or dysfunction of specific cell types in the body. This field includes cell biology, engineering, and biochemistry to help replace, repair, or regrow injured or diseased tissues; hence, it brings together experts in biology, medicine, chemistry, genetics, materials science and engineering to help to find solutions to some of the most challenging medical problems.

The next few decades will unveil the true potential of this emerging field, in which the development of biomaterials for tissue engineering and nanotechnology based materials will play a key role. Among the various challenges facing tissue engineers is the development and manipulation of artificial and natural materials, the so-called scaffolds, which provide structure and biochemical instructions to young cells as they grow into specific kinds of tissue.
