The Institute of Biomedical Research of Vigo (IBIV), was established in December 2008 as a joint initiative of the University Hospital Complex of Vigo (CHUVI), part of the public Galician Health Service (SERGAS), and the University of Vigo, with the goal of promoting basic, applied and translational research.
IBIV includes the Hospitals of the CHUVI (the Meixoeiro, Xeral, Nicolás Peña and Rebullón Hospitals) and the Universidade de Vigo. This university appears as the body applying for the project, because the IBIV is not an independent legal entity, but can be treated as a Joint Research Centre. The Servizo Galego de Saúde (SERGAS) is included as a third party, as all the hospitals are State-owned. In addition, the Fundación Biomédica is associated with SERGAS as a third party, because this Foundation is responsible for managing the economic and financial aspects of the research carried out in the University Hospital Complex of Vigo.
